About

Labas! I'm Vaiva, a Lithuanian-American textile artist deeply connected to my heritage and the one behind Studio Lizdas. My passion lies in preserving and celebrating the rich tapestry of Lithuanian culture, particularly the cherished art of weaving, which is slowly fading away.

You'll often find me immersed in the creative process – knitting, weaving, sewing, and constantly exploring new artistic avenues.

My brand, Lizdas, is a reflection of this passion. In Lithuanian, "Lizdas" translates to "nest," symbolizing the warmth, comfort, and interconnectedness that weaving evokes. Just as a nest is carefully woven together, my creations aim to bring a sense of coziness and cultural significance into your home.

Juosta, a woven belt, was an essential part of traditional Lithuanian attire until the late 19th century. While a simple belt was worn daily, special occasions called for more elaborate sashes. These sashes were highly valued gifts, often exchanged between families.

A significant tradition dictated that a bride-to-be weave numerous sashes as part of her wedding preparations. This not only showcased her weaving prowess but also served as a symbolic gesture, paving the way for a harmonious relationship with her husband's family

Today this tradition is modernized and a jusosta is gifted to the couple as a symbol of celebration and love for their new beginnings.

Juostas represent a blend of tradition and innovation, where ancient weaving techniques are reimagined to create beautiful and functional textiles for modern life, while also preserving a significant part of Lithuanian cultural heritage.

At Studio Lizdas, we warmly welcome everyone, regardless of their background or the extent of their Lithuanian heritage.

We believe that preserving Lithuanian culture enriches us all.
